We deeply appreciate every donation that people give us. There are significant differences between in-kind book donations and monetary donations, so here the process for both is addressed separately.
Book Donations Guidelines
We love books, that’s why we’re part of this project. However, in part due to financial constraints, in part because of the volume of book donations we receive, storage space for books is limited. Our time to pick up book donations is also limited, as we are an all-volunteer program.
Additionally, not all books are of equal interest to our readers. Some are in high demand and others are not, so because of this, and the above mentioned logistical constraints, we sometimes decline book donations.
All book or other in-kind donation inquiries are handled via email, so if you have a donation of this type to make, please reach out to us at davisbookstoprisons@protonmail.com.
Monetary Donation Impact
While we wish that we could sustain our program on books and volunteer labor alone, that’s not how our world works. One way or another, we must pay for shipping, storage, and other more marginal costs such as this website domain.
As mentioned, there is a spectrum of interest on the part of our readers for various sorts of books. Unfortunately, nearly all the books of highest interest (generally titles on specific law, mental health, history, and self-help/career topics) are highly unlikely to show up as donations, and must nearly always be bought new, which is costly. Ordering more of these books is and will continue to be our first order of business after our basic operating expenses are covered. These books have an immeasurable positive impact, which is why people want them, and the cost barrier, while prohibitive for our readers and significant for us, is relatively minor in the big scheme of things.
